HIGHWAYMASTER'S TRACKWARE DELIVERS TRAILER TRACKING SOLUTION; INNOVATIVE SYSTEM UNVEILED FOR TRUCKING INDUSTRY

DALLAS, Oct. 26, 1999 - HighwayMaster Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: HWYM), the leading provider of wireless voice and data communications services to the commercial trucking and service vehicle industries, today announced that its HighwayMaster Corporation subsidiary has introduced TrackWareTM , a low-cost, mobile asset tracking product that enables trucking companies to manage their trailers more cost effectively.

"TrackWare resulted from our company's strong emphasis on developing new products and lines of business that utilize our proven intelligent mobile communications capabilities," said Jana Bell, president and chief executive officer. "We believe that TrackWare's entry into the mobile asset tracking marketplace should provide the company with significant potential for growing future sales and earnings."

The easy-to-install TrackWare Remote Unit (TRU) can be attached to the exterior of a loaded or unloaded trailer by one person in about 30 minutes, with no special tools required. The unit is powered by a rechargeable battery that can continue operating when untethered for 30 to 60 days and automatically recharges when connected to a tractor. The hardware cost is about $500 per unit, with a base service fee of $4.99 to $14.99 per month, depending upon the level of service the customer requires. Each TRU includes a Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite receiver, a Cellemetry®-enabled cellular transceiver, microprocessor, antenna, battery and cables.

Customers can configure each unit to report back to them as often as four times a day or as infrequently as once a week. They may also elect to receive "trailer event" information, such as when the trailer is connected to or disconnected from a tractor. A combination of scheduled timed reports and event reports can be configured which allows dispatchers to access precise information when it is received.

"This solution answers one of the long-time, critical needs of the trucking industry to have greater control of their trailers," said Mike Evans, market segment director, Mobile Asset Tracking. "Companies should very quickly begin to realize the benefits of this system on their bottom lines as they increase the utilization of their trailers. In addition, they can refocus employees on other activities, such as enhancing customer service, instead of endlessly searching for missing trailers."

Along with the TRU, the system includes a host software application. Using standard Windows features, it displays location details and status information from the unit to the customer. The users will be able to leverage this desktop application on a PC, or if they prefer integrate it into their current fleet management software. The TrackWare host also integrates with ProMiles® 99, a mapping software from ProMiles Software Development Corporation (PSDC) that enables the customer to view trailer locations with street-level detail and to print maps for drivers dispatched to locate specific trailers.
